Random: The Beats Slow, Till You Listen at My Pace

Classic: props to Joey, gave me this a while back. Found it a sec ago, posted for no reason... Kanye, Nas, Rakim, KRS1...

"I did a little bit of college, semesters it took 2 like Rob Base,
To let me figure out this wasn’t my place,
the beat slowed til’ you listened to my pace,
Cuz I be killin’ sh*t, but that’s evident,
and y’all feelin’ it, but I expected it
If it’s classic it’s gonna last forever than I’m everywhere you never been and better than I ever been."

Live Review: St. Vincent with Foreign Born

Hey there! So, I was just sitting around doing some homework, planning on a pretty late night until news came about that the homework was no longer due the next day... So, we decided to go to this concert at the Wex. It was at the black box on mershon stage. Anyway, I had never heard of either of these bands, and I've got to say, I was pretty impressed. Before I left I checked the similar artists page on last.fm and it said Andrew Bird, so I was pretty pumped.

The show started at 8, but the band was late, so we didn't actually get let in till about 8:30 or so. It was kinda funny, while we were waiting for them to open the doors at the wex one of the band members was knocking on the door like the rest of us. It made no sense, they kept us outside for a good 15 minutes or so, then let us into the area like between the main door and the door to the lobby. After that 15 minute wait, they let us onto the stage. I had never been to the Black Box on Mershon Stage...however, I've been in the auditorium for the Wilco/Andrew Bird show. Anyway, the place was cool. It had light bulbs hanging from the ceiling and the sound was pretty good in my opinion.

Anyway, as for the opening act, Foreign Born, they were pretty good. They played a pretty solid set I'd say. They were pretty entertaining to watch. They played a bunch of new songs (not that I had heard any anyway). I'm definitely gonna have to check out their album.

Then St. Vincent took the stage. They were very interesting, with a violin, clarinet, sampler pad and a bunch of neat pedals. When they first came on the lead singer had brought out a bunch of colored wooden tree-like structures, which she would later revel to serve the purpose of making it look like they were giants in a psychedelic forest, haha, she was pretty funny, and man could she wail on that guitar. Lots of the songs delved a little into psychedelia, and some were just pretty rockin'. Being a fan of the violin, I couldn't help but love it. Also, she did a pretty rad Beatles cover. Overall, thanks to Zach for getting me to go and stop with the homework, awesome show.

Definitely check these bands out, I'll be on the lookout for 'em.

News: Kanye West Announces Glow in the Dark Tour...

Saw this a few minutes ago and damn does it look sweet. Not only Kanye, but Lupe and N.E.R.D supporting. Bad news though, didn't see any stops in the big OH. Really diggin' the concert poster, with the star wars theme and all... That reminds me, N.E.R.D announced they were coming to Columbus, pretty sure it's the Newport.

Anyway, I'll keep you posted on any news about adding Columbus... *crosses fingers*

Random: "I Pledge Alliegiance to the Funk"

Well, I would of loved to be taken away to funkadelia on the mothership with Bootsie and George Clinton, but the tickets were 33 bucks. That's just a bit too steep for little 'ole me.

Oh, getting interviewed with OHIO.FM on sunday. That's pretty cool. Oh, and next weekend is the hives and lupe fiasco, super pumped. Gotta run, take it easy.

Anyway, I'll leave you with this...

Live Review: Kevin Devine, The Jealous Girlfriends, AA Bondy

Hey there, damn it's late. I was just finishin' up some things, figured I should update you guys seeing as I haven't posted anything in like 10 years. Midterms were killin' me, but on Sunday night my roomate some friends and I went to the Kevin Devine show at the basement. First off, I really like the venue, this is my second time going but it is really cool if you haven't been there. Anyway, the first band was the Jealous Girlfriends, not a huge fan of the name, but they rocked. They opened up with some rock and then slowly called up friends to play with them, first AA Bondy(who was the second act), then Kevin Devine, real cool, looked like they had a killer time. The second act, as I said, was AA Bondy, again, someone I've never heard of, but, he was real cool. He had sort of a Dylan-esque sound with the acoustic guitar and a harmonica. He also called up friends during the course of his set. He played mostly blues, but during the end of his set he picked up the electric guitar and rocked a bit. Really impressed with these two bands, you should definately check them out.

Then came Kevin Devine, who my roomate has seen on numerous occasion, but I never actually heard any of his stuff until that night. He was awesome, he played acoustic for the beginning part of his set, and like the other bands, called up other band members to come up and play with him. You could easily tell everyone was having a wonderful time, seeing as it was the last stop of their three week tour. Kevin was not only an amazing performer, but he was pretty funny too, heh.

Anyway, like I said, my roomate and his two buddies had seen Kevin on numerous occassions, so after the show we went up and talked to him. He seemed like an awesome guy, he was jokin' around with us and everything. Haha, and before we took off, he gave us all hugs, heh. The show was a blast, everyone one there seemed to have a wonderful time. Definately see this guy if you get a chance.

btw, again, I'm workin' on getting a new camera, although, the shitty quality actually turns out cool with the basement's lighting....

Damnit!

I waited to long to call for Vampire Weekend tickets, I didn't think they would sell out. But, I mean they have been getting a ton of hype as of these past few weeks. Maybe I'll swing by the Wex and see if there are any scalpers...

What a bummer.

I'll leave you with this. Thanks zakatak.

Picks: Midway Winter Quarter Playlist!

Just got back from the Will Ferrel funny or die tour, well a few hours ago, it was awesome. I've never really seen live comedy besides like amateur night at this one small comedy club in Akron. It was really cool. It opened with Zach Galifinakas, then Dimitri Martin, and Nick Swardson. Although, I must say the highlight of the evening was when Ron Burgandy interviewed Gordon Gee.

Anyway, the meaning of this post is to give kind of a play-list of some songs I've been listening to non-stop. I've had good luck on free legal downloads as of these past couple weeks. If I were a DJ, this would be my Mix.

Check it out:

Winter Quarter Midway Playlist

1) Clinic - Harvest
2) Elf Power - Spiral Stairs
3) Joe Purdy - Just Can't Get It Right
4) The Whigs - Production City
5) Hercules & Love Affair - Hercules Theme
6) Great Northern - Home
7) Islands - The Arm
8) MGMT - Kids
9) Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks - Baltimore
10) White Denim - Paint Silver Gold
11) Vampire Weekend - Boston
12) !!! - The Step
13) TheHoodInternet.com (ABX) - Punk Your Mind
14) Blitzen Trapper - Miss Spiritual Tramp
15) The Main Drag - All My Friends
16) Destroyer - Blue Flower, Blue Flame

Special thanks to GorillaVsBear, RCRD_LBL, Pitchfork, and other places not to be named for the free downloads...

If you have not checked any of those songs out, I'd highly recommend it, and if you cant find them, send me a tell and I could probably hook you up. Some songs are new, others are just songs I missed that I really am enjoying. Hope you like 'em, they are a pretty upbeat bunch.

Adios.

You heard it here (probably not) first, but yeah, you heard it here.

lol look at the bold lines, they are important

Live Review: Dax Riggs in Akron

Whatup doods? Anyway, some things to go over. Sorry for the lack of updates, I've been extremely busy and have not been sleeping much lately, heh. I should probably be doing something else other than this, but the sacrifice must be made. As some of you know, I went with a few friends to the Dax Riggs show in Akron. I had a blast... (if it wasn't for the damn speeding ticket on the way there!)

Anyway heres a pic, and again it's just a low quality camera phone picture. My buddy took a bunch of pictures, so when I get a hold of them I'll probably upload 'em up here.

The show started out pretty calm, Dax did some slower songs, with that other guy (whose name elludes me) on acoustic guitar. After a few songs, the guy moved to drums and he could really beat the cans, they were awesome. Dax played alot of stuff from his new album, "We Sing of Only Blood or Love", which I thought was a decent album. He played some Deadboy stuff and some others, but never got to "Ancient Man" or "Walking Stick", two of my favorites. It seemed like they didn't know all their songs, Dax had sheet music in front of him and kept saying "we don't know that one", when people shouted out requests. Either way, it was a really cool show.

Oh and a little sidenote, my buddy bought the vinyl and had Dax scratch his name into it, really cool of him. I guess they were going to play the following day after the super bowl as well. My friend from akron was gonna go, but I had to head back to Columbus. Overall, really good show, kinda short, but they made up for it. If only I wouldn't have gotten that speeding ticket....haha, damn.
