Live Review: Lupe Fiasco

Welp, the weekend has come to a close and I'm officially wishing I could go back and redo it indefinitely. This Sunday I went to go see Lupe Fiasco at the Newport with a few friends. The show was put on by OUAB and tickets were only 5 bucks a pop, can't beat that. The show was pretty awesome, lupe's great. However, we were pretty far back on the floor and the bass was overpowering everything. The show was still pretty impressive. The best parts in my opinion were when lupe would rap the songs with no beats behind it. He would do a song and then do it again crazy fast with no beats. This could be a result of where I was standing. Also, for Lupe's big single "Superstar", Matthew Santos came out and performed it along side him. Apparently that's the name of the guy who does the singing on the track, didn't know. He also had his voice sampled for another song right after. His inclusion in the show was an excellent choice.

However, after the set people began to chant "encore", and at this time the majority of people had either started to or were filing off the floor. Then the lights dimmed and whoever was still waiting around jetted up to the front. This was sweet, completely reshuffled the crowd and I ended up being about seven rows back. He did about 3 or 4 more songs, including "Go Go Gadget Flow". These last 15-20 minutes were a completely different experience. Looking back, I wish I would have gotten there much earlier.

Overall, pretty sweet show, and the first hip-hop show I've been to down here. Well, except for T-pain in the fall which I happened to be walking past (which was pathetic). Hopefully I get to see some more concerts like this one.

Definately check out some of Lupe's stuff if you haven't.

damnit...just realized I accidentally deleted this sweet video clip I took...

welp, take it easy

Live Review: The Hives!

Hey there, found a little down time on this busy weekend to let you know how the hives show went.

Well, it all started with the donnas opening up for them. It seemed as though the people that came for the donnas, which there was quite a few, really enjoyed them, which is great. However, in my opinion they should just be an 80's hair metal cover band. And that is not meant to be negative, they would be very good at it, it's just not really my style.

As for the hives, they were everything their ego claims. An explosive, high-energy show to say the least. The crowd was going nuts the entire show, and I easily got caught up in the energy. There was a little bit of moshing, which I'm not a huge fan of, but it was kept in moderation so I didn't mind. They definitely had more of a punk vibe then their albums suggest, which was cool, since I haven't really been to a show like that down here yet.

Overall, they were all pretty wild guys, made the concert really fun with their shenanigans. Also, I really dig all the black and white attire. I heard that spin magazine posted them pretty high on the best live acts list, and I would agree. If you get a chance to see these guys, don't pass it up.

Now for Lupe Fiasco tonight...gonna be nasty

Random: The Beats Slow, Till You Listen at My Pace

Classic: props to Joey, gave me this a while back. Found it a sec ago, posted for no reason... Kanye, Nas, Rakim, KRS1...

"I did a little bit of college, semesters it took 2 like Rob Base,
To let me figure out this wasn’t my place,
the beat slowed til’ you listened to my pace,
Cuz I be killin’ sh*t, but that’s evident,
and y’all feelin’ it, but I expected it
If it’s classic it’s gonna last forever than I’m everywhere you never been and better than I ever been."

night,

Live Review: St. Vincent with Foreign Born

Hey there! So, I was just sitting around doing some homework, planning on a pretty late night until news came about that the homework was no longer due the next day... So, we decided to go to this concert at the Wex. It was at the black box on mershon stage. Anyway, I had never heard of either of these bands, and I've got to say, I was pretty impressed. Before I left I checked the similar artists page on last.fm and it said Andrew Bird, so I was pretty pumped.

The show started at 8, but the band was late, so we didn't actually get let in till about 8:30 or so. It was kinda funny, while we were waiting for them to open the doors at the wex one of the band members was knocking on the door like the rest of us. It made no sense, they kept us outside for a good 15 minutes or so, then let us into the area like between the main door and the door to the lobby. After that 15 minute wait, they let us onto the stage. I had never been to the Black Box on Mershon Stage...however, I've been in the auditorium for the Wilco/Andrew Bird show. Anyway, the place was cool. It had light bulbs hanging from the ceiling and the sound was pretty good in my opinion.

Anyway, as for the opening act, Foreign Born, they were pretty good. They played a pretty solid set I'd say. They were pretty entertaining to watch. They played a bunch of new songs (not that I had heard any anyway). I'm definitely gonna have to check out their album.

Then St. Vincent took the stage. They were very interesting, with a violin, clarinet, sampler pad and a bunch of neat pedals. When they first came on the lead singer had brought out a bunch of colored wooden tree-like structures, which she would later revel to serve the purpose of making it look like they were giants in a psychedelic forest, haha, she was pretty funny, and man could she wail on that guitar. Lots of the songs delved a little into psychedelia, and some were just pretty rockin'. Being a fan of the violin, I couldn't help but love it. Also, she did a pretty rad Beatles cover. Overall, thanks to Zach for getting me to go and stop with the homework, awesome show.

Definitely check these bands out, I'll be on the lookout for 'em.

News: Kanye West Announces Glow in the Dark Tour...

Saw this a few minutes ago and damn does it look sweet. Not only Kanye, but Lupe and N.E.R.D supporting. Bad news though, didn't see any stops in the big OH. Really diggin' the concert poster, with the star wars theme and all... That reminds me, N.E.R.D announced they were coming to Columbus, pretty sure it's the Newport.

Anyway, I'll keep you posted on any news about adding Columbus... *crosses fingers*

Random: "I Pledge Alliegiance to the Funk"

Well, I would of loved to be taken away to funkadelia on the mothership with Bootsie and George Clinton, but the tickets were 33 bucks. That's just a bit too steep for little 'ole me.

Oh, getting interviewed with OHIO.FM on sunday. That's pretty cool. Oh, and next weekend is the hives and lupe fiasco, super pumped. Gotta run, take it easy.

Anyway, I'll leave you with this...
